Palla Lois Stickney Hazen passed away peacefully with her family at her side February 26, 2012. She was born December 24, 1920 at the family farmhouse in Pompanoosuc, VT, to Hazen Lorenzo and Julia Church Stickney, second of five children. She attended grammar school in Pompanoosuc and graduated from Thetford Academy in 1939. She received a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Vermont in 1943 and then taught in a one room school house in Wilder, Vermont.
She married Henry Hazen August 20, 1944 at the Union Village Church. They owned and operated Brookside Farm, the 6th generation of the Hazen family to farm at the site of the Hazen Homestead. They raised eight children there. She was predeceased by her husband in 1963.
Palla reluctantly learned to drive at age 50. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, and baking – particularly bread, chocolate chip cookies, and fudge. She was devoted to her church, her pets, children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Barbara Hazen of Eugene, OR; Peggy Fey (Ron) of Newton, IA; Ginny Hazen (Larry Ranslow) of Norwich, VT; Cathy Masterson (Tom) of Windham, ME; Julie Schmitz (Michael) of Weathersfield, VT; Sally Britton of Norwich, VT; Henry Hazen of Wilder, VT; Asa Hazen (Terry) of Stamford, CT; sisters Joyce Stickney and Shirley Livingston; twelve grandchildren: Brian, Ron and Adam Fey; Thomas Darrah; Shelly Masterson; Jeffrey Britton; Dylan, Dana and Mary Hazen; Eric, Leah and Stacy Hazen; four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers George and Howard.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ or the Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society
