ASCUTNEY, VT
Orrin A. Hellickson, 97, a resident of Ascutney and formerly of Hammond, IN, passed away Wednesday morning, December 9, at his home in Ascutney.
He was born June 1, 1918 in Ironton, MN the son of Theodore and Mable (Lofsvold) Hellickson. He learned to drive at the age of 10 in a 1924 Buick touring car and learned to fly by the age of 18 in a Piper Cub and later a Cessna 150. He received his schooling in Duluth, MN. He married Guldia Loy in Hammond on April 21, 1938. He remarried to Shirley Lareau in Hammond on January 14, 1961. Mr. Hellickson was employed as a foreman at Inland Steel in East Chicago, IN for 45 years until his retirement in 1982. He also had several business ventures including Varsity Grill hamburgers and Dixie Cream donuts.
After his retirement, he became an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed making intricate wooden toys in his workshop. He was a member of the Northwest Indiana Woodworkers Association. His wife Shirley passed away in 2005. He moved to Colorado in 2009 and Vermont in 2011.
He was predeceased by his parents; one son, Ronald in 1992; two brothers, Eugene and Lyle; and one sister, Fern Osman.
Survivors include, two sons, Robert (Lori) Hellickson of Westwood, CA and Rick Hellickson of Aurora, CO; two daughters, Denise Lynch of Hammond and Deborah Hellickson of Ascutney, VT; one daughter-in-law, Judith; five grandchildren, Patti, Norine, Anne, Trisha and Kelsey; six great grandchildren, Adam, Andrew, Jackie, Sam, Calvin and Hailey; three great great grandchildren, Kierstyn, Emmersyn and Carter; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 11:00am at Suncrest Christian Church 10009 Parrish Ave. St John, IN 46373 (219) 365-9000.
Orrin loved spending time and sharing his life stories with the children at Mid Vermont Christian School. He also found joy in sharing many of his handmade trains with Toys for Tots. Therefore, the family has chosen memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to the Mid Vermont Christian School at 399 West Gilson Avenue, White River Jct., VT 05001 mvcs.info/home or Toys for Tots at toysfortots.org
