Norman E. Toby
White River Jct., VT – Norman E. Toby, 70, passed away suddenly on Saturday December 10, 2017 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
Toby was a proud native Vermonter, born at the former McFarland House in Barre, VT on July 16, 1947 a son of Elbridge M. and Lois M. (Slayton) Toby. He grew up and attended school in Adamat, VT before moving to Stowe to work at the Green Mountain Inn. While in Stowe he met Carolyn Illsley, they were married May 7, 1970 in North Pomfret, VT where they made there home for several years. Later the family moved to White River Jct. where they have lived since. Toby worked at the Woodstock Inn for a time and later at Dartmouth Dining Services, Barker Steel in Lebanon and then at Quechee Mobil before retiring. During his retirement he worked part time at Jasmin Auto in White River Jct. to stay active.
Toby loved the outdoors and over the years enjoyed maple sugaring, fishing, roasting corn, gardening and in his younger years, hunting. He also enjoyed yard sales and volunteering at the Bugbee Senior Center in White River Jct. He never met a stranger he didn't know and could converse with everyone. His passion was working with stone and building stone walls but his favorite role was being a grandpa.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Cheryl Johnson.
He leaves his wife of 47 years, Carolyn, of White River Jct.; daughters Alison L. (Toby) Brockway and her husband Keith of Albion, ME and Erin E. Toby of Nashua, NH; grandson Myles Brockway and brother Lester G. Toby and his wife Patricia of Calais, VT.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. on Saturday December 16th from 12:30PM to 2PM. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 2PM with refreshments after at the Bugbee Senior Center. Burial will take place in the West Hartford Cemetery in the spring.
