IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Norman P.
Smith
June 26, 1944 – June 20, 2023
Norman Paul Smith, eldest son of Paul and Avis Smith, of Wilder, Vermont died June 20, 2023 at his home. He was born on June 26, 1944. He was a lifelong resident of the Upper Valley, graduating from Hartford High School in 1962. He enlisted in the Navy in 1962 with an Honorable Discharge in 1966. He returned home where he raised his family and worked in his family business as a carpenter. He also held many jobs throughout the years. Until March of this year, Norm was a crossing guard at Evans and Hanover Streets in Lebanon, where he kept children safe while crossing the street; a job he loved doing for almost 4 years until he became ill. He was just six days shy of turning 79. But he is no longer in pain or suffering.
Norm enjoyed tinkering with machinery, especially repairing lawn mowers that he loved doing for people in the area for many years. He also enjoyed doing house projects and spending time with Nancy, the love of his life. He treasured their annual vacations to York Beach, Maine.
Norman loved just being outside mowing the lawn, cutting wood in the fall and even snow blowing with his Kubota during the winter. The last few months when he couldn't be outside, he enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels through the window. His wish was to get better and get outside to do the things he wanted, but unfortunately that wasn't meant to be. His greatest sadness was that he would leave Nancy alone.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy Beard Smith, daughter, Samara Lynn Wakefield of Port Orchard, WA, sons, Randall Norman Smith and Alfred Paul Smith of West Lebanon, and adopted daughter, Michelle Smith of Florida. He is also survived by his siblings, Janice Spencer, Deanne Spaulding, Alana Barrows and Alan Smith, along with 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Norm had many pets during his life, and leaves behind his beloved cats, Jackson, and Sasha. They watched over him and kept him company the past few months when he was housebound. He wishes you to consider a donation in his name to either The Upper Valley Humane Society or Lucy McKenzie Humane Society.
Although he didn't want a service, in combination with his sister-in-law, Betty Shaw, there will be a celebration of their lives on July 29th from 1-3 at the home of niece, Joanna Martinoli at 109 Anthony Drive in Laconia, NH.
Rest in peace, Norman, until we are together again. We love you and miss you dearly.
