White River Junction, VT— Nona Elsie (McGranaghan) Flanders, 96, passed away peacefully June 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital.
Nona was born in Corinth, VT on September 21, 1929, the daughter of Joseph and Florence (Parker) McGranaghan. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1948.
Nona dedicated more than 32 years of service to the New England Bell Telephone company, where she worked as a telephone operator until her retirement in 1990 and was member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. True to her spirited nature, Nona was not one to sit idle after retirement. Her strong work ethic led her to Dartmouth College, where she continued working as a telephone operator for five years.
Known for her stubborn Irish charm, warm heart, and independent spirit, Nona enjoyed many activities throughout her life. She loved gardening, baking, and sharing her treasured recipes with family and friends. She also enjoyed bowling and was a proud member of a bowling league for a time. Nona had a fun-loving side and enjoyed a little gambling, always bringing her own special personality and enthusiasm wherever she went.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Florence (Parker) McGranaghan; her first husband, Roger E. Lemery, Sr.; her second husband David C. Flanders; her brothers, Clifton McGranaghan, Ivan McGranaghan, and Douglas McGranaghan; and her grandson, Richard Dunbar.
She is survived by her brother, Lee McGranaghan; her children, Sandra Cummings, Roger E. Lemery, Jr., Kelly Lemery, and Ann Marie Palmieri (Frank); her granddaughter, Amber Burke; her nephews, Steve McGranaghan and Dana McGranaghan; nieces, Lorrie Dunn and Lisa Potwin; and several other nieces and nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Nona will be remembered for her resilience, her humor, her love of family, and the many memories she created throughout her 96 years of life.
At Nona’s request, there will be no formal services. Her family will celebrate her life together at a later date. Condolences may be shared with Nona’s family through the online guest book at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
