Canaan, NH – Nellie M. Withington, 95, died Monday March 4, 2013 at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH.
She was born October 16, 1917 in Enfield, NH a daughter of Charles J. and Mary (Quimby) Sanders. Nellie graduated from Hartford High School in 1935 and from the Elliot Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. On March 15, 1947 she was married to Robert S. Withington in Enfield, NH, they lived in White River Junction, VT until 1966 when they made their home in Canaan and raised a family. She began working as a private duty nurse in 1958, and worked in the Upper Valley area for over twenty years.
Mrs. Withington was a longtime member of the Assembly of God Church in Canaan where she was a Sunday school teacher and enjoyed playing gospel music on her violin. She also volunteered and played her violin at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in White River Jct. and at McKerley's Nursing Home in Lebanon as well as at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1985; a daughter Carol Ann Withington in 1961; two sisters Sadie Brown and Mable, five brothers Frank, Earl, Wayne, Harry and Frederick Sanders and a grandchild.
She is survived by two sons Robert S. Withington Jr. and his partner Gerri and David A. Withington and his wife Patty both of Canaan, NH and two daughters Viola M. Daniels and her husband Donald and Mary J. Vella and her husband Charley both of Enfield, eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct. Friday March 8th at 10AM. Committal services will take place in the Christian Street Cemetery later in the Spring.
