Nanine K. Hutchinson, 78, passed away on September 1 at Valley Terrace Assisted Living Center in Wilder, VT. Nanine was born on June 1, 1936 in Oneonta, NY to Marshall and Katherine (Weed) Hutchinson. She attended schools in Oneonta, and graduated from Wells College, Aurora, NY in 1958. After college, Nanine began a long and successful career in publishing beginning at Harvard University Press in Cambridge, MA where she inaugurated the Press's program of exhibiting books at scholarly meetings. In 1972, she joined the University Press of New England (UPNE) in Hanover, NH as marketing manager. During her tenure, UPNE grew to a successful consortium of university presses from Dartmouth College, Brandeis University, Northeastern University and UNH. Nanine, in her quiet and talented way, encouraged universities to join the consortium and helped build the group's reputation. The continued success of UPNE is a tribute to Nanine's perseverance, excellence, writing skills and hard work.

Nanine was an outstanding quilter and participated in Upper Valley quilting groups. Her quilts have been featured in Vermont Life and in the Quilt Engagement Calendar. One of her quilts won the Governor's Award at the Vermont Quilt Festival.

In 1978, she met her future husband Henry Selle. Nanine was active in the Appalachian Mountain Club and enjoyed hiking the AMC trails in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. In the winter, she and Henry were often out on their cross country skis and snowshoes. They were also avid flower gardeners who produced splendid displays at their home in Thetford.


Besides her parents, Nanine was predeceased by her husband Henry in 2005, a brother Peter in 1976, and an infant brother David in 1943. She is survived by a sister Alberta Hutchinson of Gilbertsville, NY, a sister-in-law Michele Hutchinson of Middletown, NY, and two nephews Jeffery and Christopher Hutchinson. On Henry Selle's side, she survived by three of his four children and their spouses – Bart and Judy Selle, Martha and Ted Hartman, and Andrew and Dawna Selle, as well as Henry's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the staff at Valley Terrace and for Nanine's friend and caregiver, Sandy Rilling.

A memorial service will be held at Thetford Baptist Church, 97 Church Lane, East Thetford, VT on Sunday September 14 at 4:00 PM.
