IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Gray
Curtis
June 9, 1944 – October 16, 2024
Michael Gray Curtis of Corinth, VT, died peacefully at home on October 16th, 2024. Born June 9th, 1944, to William Edgar and Doris Gray Curtis, Mike enjoyed a long career as an architect, living and working in Connecticut before retiring to the home he built in the Green Mountains.
Mike graduated from The Pomfret School in 1962, where he was introduced to the sport of rowing. Rowing became a life-long passion continuing during his undergraduate years at Yale College, and beyond earning his Master of Architecture degree at Yale University.
He was among the first students to participate in the Yale Building Project, founded by Kent Bloomer and Charles Moore, which gave students hands-on construction experience and introduced the concept of design and construction as social responsibilities. Project teams created buildings to provide gathering spaces for underserved communities in the New Haven, CT, and Appalachian Mountain regions.
With longtime friend and classmate, Turner Brooks of Turner Brooks Architects, Mike partnered in the design and construction management of Yale's Gilder Boat House on the Housatonic River in Shelton, CT. Noted for its soaring curves reflecting the men's and women's team rowing shells, the boat house became home to a community rowing program enabling local youths to develop new skills. Mike also completed commercial, academic and residential projects throughout New England, and served as Wesleyan University's campus planner and chief architect for many years.
Mike was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Carey (Chittenden). He is survived by his sisters, Julie Curtis (Paul Fay) of Boston, MA, and Annie Chittenden (Paul) of Westbrook, CT, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who cherish time spent with him. In addition to his professional achievements, Mike's creative spark, dry humor, endless generosity and unshakable integrity remain hallmarks of his life.
