IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Merton M.
Young
January 18, 1937 – February 19, 2025
Quechee, VT – Merton M. Young, 88, died Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at his son's home in Norton, VT.
He was born January 18, 1937, in Lebanon, NH a son of Melvin and Nellie (Ordway) Young and lived all his life in Quechee. He attended elementary school in Quechee and graduated from Hartford High School in 1955. After high school he served in the US Navy for four years, working on construction projects with the Sea-Bees. When he returned home from the Navy, his life-long friend, Jim Luce introduced him to Louise Calvi, who was visiting from out of state. It was love at first sight and the two were married a year later in 1959.
Merton learned his work ethic at an early age when he began working with his father in the family contracting business while still in high school. When he returned from the military he began working full-time in all aspects of home building, from pouring concrete foundations to roofing and everything in between. When Quechee Lakes began the company grew and Merton found himself as the foreman of the operation.
When he wasn't at work, Merton enjoyed working around the house, fixing, or building whatever was needed. He also enjoyed gardening, listening to classic country music, and watching sports including the New York Giants, Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins as well as local teams. He received a Lionel model train as a boy and continued collecting throughout his life. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially loved cookouts with the whole family together.
Merton's family would like to thank Christopher Nice and his staff at the White River Jct. VAMC, Tanya Luttinger and her staff at DHMC, and the Orleans-Essex VNA Hospice for all the wonderful care that Merton received.
He was predeceased by his wife, Louise, in 2022, a brother, Marshall Young and a sister, Bernice Hunsaker.
He leaves his children, Debra Remick (Raymond) of Hartland, Karen Clough (Sam) of Quechee, Scott Young (Maria) of Jericho, VT and Jim Young (his partner Candy) of Norton, VT; grandchildren, Stephen Remick (Jessica), Ashley Cole-Henry (James), Brett and Rocco Clough, Jessica Caldwell (Charles), Rebecca, Olliver & Eric Young, Kalie and Mylee Patenaude; great-grandchildren, Allie and Ana Cole-Henry, Andrew and Caroline Remick and Malcolm and Elliot Caldwell as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., on Wednesday, February 26 from 1-3PM with a funeral service to follow at 3pm. Burial will take place at 1pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in the Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee, VT with full military honors.
