IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maxine
Griswold
April 15, 1934 – April 30, 2023
Maxine Mae Griswold, 89, a lifelong member of the Windsor community, died peacefully Sunday, April 30, 2023, in Springfield, VT. She was born on April 15, 1934, and married David Griswold in Claremont, NH on July 6, 1954. Vivacious, full of energy, and warm-hearted, Maxine loved a party and was usually the life of it. When she wasn't out dancing, her house was often overflowing with family and friends. From Sunday pancake breakfasts or a day at the lake with the local grandchildren, to a packed house every holiday, she good-naturedly embraced the noise and fun. If she knew you, you were family and always welcome.
Maxine loved sports. As a girl, she had a passion for horseback riding. Later she played basketball, skied, golfed, and was in a bowling league. When she no longer participated in sports herself, she attended as a spectator. She cheered on the Windsor teams, her grandchildren's teams, and her Yankees!
She worked for 33 years at Goodyear Tire and Rubber and liked to joke that her seven children were fast swimmers because she worked the presses while pregnant with each of them and might have bumped their bottoms against the hot metal. When her children were young, she could be found out dancing with her husband on Saturday nights and volunteering at swim meets Sunday mornings.
Never one to be idle, in her "retirement" she continued working well into her 80s; she especially loved her time at the JP Larkin Country Club and volunteering at Mt. Ascutney hospital. Maxine made friends easily, and everyone knew and loved her.
Because she was "Forever Maxine. Forever young." The debilitating stroke that she suffered three years ago felt especially cruel and was devastating to both her and her family. Even then, she would still shine forth some of her former humor and mischievousness and manage to make everyone who met her love her. As one of her grandchildren said, "she was the brightest of lights".
She is survived by seven children, Linda Richardson of Windsor, David Griswold (Bonny) of Hartland, VT, Donald Griswold of Windsor, Denis Griswold of Windsor, Lisa Griswold (Don) of Norwich, VT, Lori Parent (Roger) of Brownsville, and Leanna Tomlinson (Aron) of Bradford, VT; one brother, David "Joe" Durphey of Claremont; beloved bonus daughter, Carol Griswold of Hartland; eleven grandchildren Marcy, Keith, Lindsay, Garrett, Arianna, Olivia, Zoe, Elissa, Kathleen, Andrew, and Hayden; many great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Mildred (Warren) Durphey, her husband, and two siblings, Betty A. White and William Durphey.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, June 17th, 2023, in the Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee, VT. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
