Hanover, NH - Mathilde "Mimi" Kantack, 99, died peacefully Saturday evening, February 28, 2015 at Valley Terrace in White River Junction, VT. Born January 8, 1916 in New York City, the daughter of Louis H. Schwiers and Clementine von Aerschott Schwiers, Mimi grew up in Manhattan. She graduated from Marymount High School and received a bachelor's degree from Manhattanville College in 1937. She married W. Byron Kantack July 17, 1943. After World War II they moved to Bronxville, NY where they raised their family.
Mimi was active in the community--an early Hospice and Head Start volunteer; she participated in a UN study group through the League of Women Voters and taught religious education to 1st and 2nd graders in her parish. She served as president of the Manhattanville Alumnae Association and she especially enjoyed playing bridge with friends and family.
After her husband died, she moved to Hanover, NH in 2000 where she enjoyed theater at Northern Stage and concerts at Dartmouth. She took ILLEAD classes, went to Garden Club meetings and luncheons with the International Women's Club.
She is also predeceased by her only sister, Suzette Whittemore.
She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Karlen and her husband, Sven, of Hanover and her three sons, Bob Kantack and his wife, Anne, of Jackson, NH, John Kantack and Tom Kantack, both of Hanover; as well as her grandchildren, Amy Karlen Neuman and her husband, Scott, Jon and Francie Karlen, Jenny Karlen Elliott and her husband, Grant, Peter and Meg Karlen, Matt and Caprice Kantack, Geoff and Whitney Kantack, Liz Kantack Dyrenforth, and her husband, Tom, and Keith Kantack; AND 13 great grandchildren: Annie, Henry and Emma Neuman, Byron, Sarah and Daphne Karlen, Sam, Peter, George and James Elliott, Sienna and Oscar Karlen and Hugo Kantack.
Visiting Hours will be held Tuesday, March 3 from 6 to 8 pm at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction, VT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 4th at 11:00 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 15 Church Street, White River Junction, VT. Burial will be in New York in the spring.
