Hartford, VT – Mathew S. Shumway, 36, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Mat was born August 4, 1989, in Laconia, NH, a son of Michael and Jane (Edmunds) Shumway. He graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre, VT. Mat was employed as a manager at the Barre Mobile Station before transitioning into carpentry, working throughout the Upper Valley. Most recently, he was employed as a meat cutter at Sharon Beef in Sharon, VT.

Mat was an avid New York Jets fan and could often be found watching or playing football. He enjoyed spending time with friends and listening to music. His greatest joy came from time spent with his mother and brother. He dearly loved, and was deeply loved by, his nieces and nephews, who affectionately called him "Uncle Moo."

He was predeceased by his father, Michael Shumway. Mat is survived by his mother, Jane Shumway of West Hartford, VT; his brother, Michael Shumway II of Rutland, VT; nieces and nephews; two grandmothers Barbara Woods and Alma Edmunds; a grandfather Nelson Gilman and several aunts and uncles.
