Obituary

White River Junction, VT. – Mary Cook Ware, 82, died Sunday, July 17th at her home with her daughter at her side, after a stoic year-long battle with lung cancer.

Mary was born in Rutland, the daughter of Ralph and Florence (White) Cook. She grew up in Ludlow, VT. and was graduated from Black River High School and Rutland Business College. At the start of her career, she worked at the Ludlow Telephone Company, Central Vermont Public Service Corporation, and Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Company in Springfield, VT. Mary's unlimited energy combined with her impeccable work ethic resulted in 30 years as a Manufacturing Engineering Secretary/Technician full-time at Split Ball Bearing (now Timken Aerospace), 22 years part-time as a Unit Secretary at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital (now Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center) and 34 years doing accounting work for Gilberte Interiors in Hanover, N.H., concurrently. She was still working part-time for them until she became ill last year. Had it not been for the illness of her husband of 22 years, William Ware, she would have waited much longer to retire. She channeled that tireless energy to take care of him through a long battle with cancer that allowed him to die with dignity at home.

After his passing, Mary used her time in semi-retirement to pursue the interests she had been unable to while working so much earlier in her life. She loved to garden, cook, walk; was an ardent lover of craft fairs; active in politics on seniors' issues; and due to good health until her diagnosis last year, she enjoyed helping neighbors and friends who were either unable to get out or unable to do errands for themselves.

She was predeceased by her brother, Kinney Cook. Mary leaves a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Marcia (Braley) Cook, and her daughter, Holly Wallace Bastier, of Norwood, MA.
