Mary K. "Nan" Sweet, 95, a lifelong resident of Windsor passed away Monday evening, February 18 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center surrounded by "her girls".
She was born October 13, 1917 in Windsor the daughter of John W. and Mary (Ruggles) Kimball. She received her schooling in Windsor where she graduated from Windsor High School in 1936.
She married Fay M. "Bump" Sweet in Windsor on September 4, 1937. She was employed at the former Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Windsor for twenty years. She and her husband enjoyed working summer months at Androscoggin Boys Camp in Wayne, Maine for fifteen years. They had also spent summer months on their property on the Connecticut River in Lyme, NH where they raised and sold vegetables. They spent the winter months in Florida for many years.
Mary volunteered at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital. She was an avid hiker and had hiked the Appalachian Trail with her father and enjoyed hiking with her grandson-in-law, Larry French. She was the oldest recognized person to have climbed Mt. Ascutney at the age of eighty five.
She also was fond of sewing, writing letters, gardening and camping. She was very devoted to her family and many friends, especially her three granddaughters who she affectionately called "My Girls".
Mr. Sweet passed away on June 21, 1988. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Harriette Kimball and Dorothy Kimball.
Survivors include, one son, Kimball F. Sweet and his wife, Sandra of Windsor, VT and Wildwood, FL, her three granddaughters, Kimberly F. Cardona and her husband, Otto of Exeter, NH, Susanne French and her husband, Larry of Sunapee, NH and Karen A. Townsend and her husband, Winthrop III of Windsor, three great grandchildren, Paige Townsend and Winthrop "Winnie" Townsend IV, both of Windsor, and Gabriella Cardona of Brockton, MA, one great great grandson, Christian Suriel of Brockton, MA, one niece, Darnice Colson-Cook of Kennebunkport, ME.
At Mary's request a graveside service will be held at a later date in the family lot in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor.
Her family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Mt. Ascutney Hospital for their kindness and exceptional care shown to Mrs. Sweet.
