Martha Janet Stewart
Ludlow, VT – Martha Janet Stewart, 81, died peacefully Tuesday evening March 19th at Cedar Hill Continuing Care in Windsor with her daughter Judi, son-in-law Julian and niece Linda Hastings by her side.
She was born January 23, 1932 in Ludlow, a daughter of George and Lillian (Rhoades) Scales. Janet lived all of her life in Ludlow, where she graduated from Black River High School in 1950. In 1972 she was married to C.J. Stewart who operated the John C. Stewart & Son Ford dealership in Cuttingsville, VT. During their marriage the two travelled extensively.
Janet was an active member of the United Church of Ludlow, the Tyson's Ladies Aid and the Lake Rescue Association. She was also a member of the D.A.R. She especially loved spending time with her dog, Buffy.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, CJ, one daughter, Jill Burton, one sister Eleanor Bickford, two brothers James Scales and Elmer Scales, and one stepson, Tim Stewart.
Janet is survived by a daughter Judi Krieger and her husband Julian of Ludlow; a step son Michael J. Stewart and his wife Christine of Cuttingsville; a step daughter Lauren Stewart and her husband Tim Smith also of Cuttingsville; two step grandchildren; a brother Art Scales of Mt. Holly, VT; a sister Jit Manning of Ludlow and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be celebrated at 11AM on Saturday March 23rd at the United Church of Ludlow located at 48 Pleasant Street with a luncheon to follow.
