Martelina Ocasio, 66, died Thursday evening, July 18th, at her home in Windsor VT under the loving care of her daughter and family members. She was born August 29th, 1952 in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, the daughter of Antonio and Monserate (Almodóvar) Ocasio.
Her family moved to upstate New York when she was four months old. She grew up in Syracuse and graduated from St. Mary's Academy. Martelina was a true miracle, surviving a severe car accident at the age of 16. She went on to do things the doctors told her she would never do, including walking, and giving birth to her beloved daughter.
When she was 28, Martelina married Raymond V. Terino, and a year later gave birth to their daughter, Mar-Rae Terino. As a family, they lived in various places around the country including returning to the mountains in Puerto Rico. Raymond passed away in 1993. Martelina and her daughter move closer to family in Vermont, Where they live together for the last 23 years.
Martelina worked as a housekeeper during most of her life. She enjoyed watching the birds, and playing Spades with her card group called the "Witches of Hartland". She also loved to dance especially to Salsa and Soul music. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Martelina was preceded by her three brothers, Juan, Raymond, and Jose. She is survived by her mother Monserate Ocasio of Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, her daughter, Mar-Rae Terino of Windsor, VT, two grandchildren Mitalia and Vincent, four brothers, William, Israel, Luis, and Carlos Ocasio, three sisters, Gloria Colon, Julia Vazquez and Amparo Ocasio, her "comay" Gretchen Ocasio, Sister in-law Heidi Schmertz, 145 nieces, nephews and "greats", as well as many beloved in-laws from the from the Ocasio family as well as the Terino- Prieto family in Syracuse NY, who cherished her as a sister of their own.
A celebration of life will be held September 1st at 3 PM, at the Skunk Hollow Tavern in Hartland, VT. In lieu of flowers, memorial Contributions can be made to The Haven in WRJ, VT.
