IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mark A.
Coutermarsh
May 30, 1928 – February 19, 2022
North Hartland, Vermont – Mark A. Coutermarsh, our family Patriarch, died at age 93 on February 19, 2022, at home in North Hartland, VT, with his wife, Martha by his side.
He was born on May 30, 1928, on Christian Street in Hartford, VT, the seventh and youngest child of parents, Charles A. and Anna A. (Jerome) Coutermarsh. Mark was predeceased by two brothers, Charles J. Coutermarsh and Robert M. Coutermarsh; and four sisters, Esther Prybylo, Ruth Ruhling, Gladys Blood and Dorothy Langley.
Mark graduated from Hartford High School in 1946. While in high school he worked for his brother-in-law, Denny Blood's seafood business. After graduation he went to work for the Hanover Food Coop vitalizing their meat department. Mark married Shirley Reynolds in 1949, divorced 1986. In 1951, Mark and his brother purchased the general store in North Hartland, VT and operated it as Coutermarsh Brothers General Store. Mark was a meat cutter, volunteer fireman, selectman, a Vice President with North Hartland Cooperative Water System and postmaster in North Hartland. He enjoyed beekeeping with his good friend, Bill Matson, hunting with his buddies and fishing in all seasons. He would fly fish at his favorite spot on the White River, ice fish in his shanty on Lake Fairlee, and spent many hours fishing in his boat on the Connecticut River.
Martha and Mark were married the night of July 11, 1992, under the light of a full moon with a serenade from Whippoorwills. Together they enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, feeding the birds and just relaxing on the deck at their home on the river.
Mark is survived by his wife, Martha (Merritt) Coutermarsh and two daughters: Deborah A. Adams (Wayne), granddaughters Jody Adams Brenner (Kurt) and Kristen Adams Walsh (John), and two great granddaughters, Alyssa Walsh and Paige Brenner and daughter Darlene C. Levy and grandchildren Morgan A. Levy, Austin T. Levy and Cameron R. Levy.
A private burial will be at a later date in Hartland Village Cemetery. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Kelly Kieffer, Aging in Hartland Community Nurse Program, Bayada Hospice and Knight Funeral Home for their care and compassion.
The family suggests that memorial donations may be made in Mark's name to the Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society, P.O. Box 702, Brownsville, VT 05037
