IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret
Mayo
August 4, 1919 – September 7, 2024
Margaret "Marge" (Golden) Mayo died September 7, 2024, at her home in Windsor, Vermont with family and hospice support by her side. She was 105 years old. She was born in Whitehall, New York on August 4, 1919, the daughter of William Edward Golden and Isabell Adeline (Tromblee). She is the last surviving sibling of six children. She married Franklin Earl Mayo February 1942 and moved to Windsor in 1947.
Margaret's childhood was difficult with a mother often sick and in bed, leaving Margaret to care for her younger siblings. She left school in eighth grade because of the needs of her family and never returned. During that time, she had to learn to do everything.
She married her husband during the war and when he returned from fighting, she taught herself the skills to support her family by sewing for others. She built a career as a seamstress and reupholstering. She did alterations and made clothing for about 500 clients throughout New England right up until she was 100 years old.
Throughout the years she was known by many to visit people in Nursing Homes and take them baked goods. For 12 years she was caretaker to her husband who battled Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
She was a friend to everyone and always there to help. She loved gardening, sewing, cooking, crafts and upholstering. She gave many people their hair sets and permanents throughout the years.
Margaret's amazing energy and love for other people will be greatly missed.
She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Mayo in 1986. Her siblings included brothers, Joseph Golden, William Golden and Robert Golden and two sisters, Shirley Merek and Elizabeth Brisson.
She is survived by her two sons, Howard Earl Mayo (Lynda) of Gill, MA and Richard William Mayo (Barbara) of Central Square, NY.
Her grandchildren include Lisa Porter (Paul) of Pueblo Colorado, Katherine Dunklee of Townsend, MA, Kristy Hughes (Charlie) of Bolton, MA and Zack Mayo of Central Square, NY
