Obituary

West Lebanon, NH— Malcolm Joslin McFarlin, died at home, with family present, on Thursday October 5, 2017.

He was born in Newton, Massachusetts September 16, 1935.

Malcolm grew up in Dedham, Massachusetts with his parents, Vernon and Dorothy, and his four sisters. He graduated from New Hampton School in 1953, and earned his B.S. from the University of Massachusetts in 1959. He later went on to earn his Masters in Education from Northeastern University in 1965.

Growing up, Malcolm was active in scouting and enjoyed many hikes and campouts with his scouting friends. He met his future wife Trudi while at home visiting his family in Dedham, and they married on August 30, 1958. Shortly thereafter he settled with Trudi and his young family in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Malcolm began teaching high school science in Windsor, Vermont, and he continued teaching science at both Lebanon Junior High School, and Lebanon High School for another 24 years. He also enjoyed the many hours he spent teaching young drivers as a driving instructor, working part time until only a few years ago.

Malcolm was an environmental steward, composting and recycling long before it became commonplace. From his garden on Abbott Street the family enjoyed their own vegetables throughout the year. He loved his property in Chelsea, Vermont. What began with family and friends camping in a tent, soon evolved into the construction of a log cabin that the family continues to enjoy.

In retirement, Malcolm enjoyed numerous outdoor activities including kayaking, hiking, and working on the woodpile, and he enjoyed being actively present in his children's and his grandchildren's lives. He could also be found offering his time and service to St. Paul's outreach programs, and it's community members. He most loved his time spent helping with the annual bargain bin, and the time he spent helping those affected by Hurricane Irene.

He was predeceased by his wife Trudi, his parents Vernon and Dorothy, and his sister Ann.

Survivors include three children: Mark McFarlin and his wife Jody of Hampton, Kathy McFarlin of Claremont, and Emily Stewart and husband Bob of Newbury; seven grandchildren and a great grandchild; three sisters; Sally McFarlin, Susan Seluta, and Kathy McCullough.

A funeral service will be held at 11am, Monday October 16, 2017 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 749 Hartford Avenue, White River Junction, Vt. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul's Church or Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire, PO Box 881, Brattleboro, Vt. 05302. Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction assisted with arrangements.
