White River Jct., VT - Madeleine "Maggie" Scelza, 94, died Wednesday December 5, 2012 following a brief illness.
Maggie was born June 1, 1918 a daughter of Anthony V. and Bridget M. (Romano) Scelza in White River Jct., where she lived and worked her entire life. She grew up in the South End and graduated from Hartford High School Class of 1936 where she was a member of the varsity basketball team. After high school she worked for a short time at Williams Laundry and later as a telephone operator for New England Telephone. She then worked with her brother at Tony's News for thirty seven years until her family sold the store. Maggie finished her work life in the Canteen at the Veteran's Administration Hospital for ten years, retiring in 1983.
She was an active member of St. Anthony's Church and a life member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary both in White River Jct. She also volunteered at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, spending many hours there working BINGO. Maggie loved sports of all types, especially the Boston Red Sox and attended many World Series games throughout her life.
Maggie is predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Angelo "Bromo" Scelza, Anthony "Tony" Scelza, and Richard Scelza; five sisters, Angela Gravel, Josephine "Josie" Coutermarsh, Margaret "Jackie" Gour, Michelina Scelza, and Rosanna Gillies; her great aunt Sabina Melio and lifetime partner Billy Kontos. She leaves behind a sister Connie Leonard and a sister-in-law Anna Scelza.
Although Maggie didn't have any children of her own she was especially close to her many nieces and nephews to whom she was like a second mother. She also leaves behind her beloved birds Blue and Angel.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., from 4-6PM on Sunday December 9th. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday December 10th at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's Church with burial following in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
