Lucia Armstrong Williams, age 80, died on Sunday, July 31 at her home in Windsor Vermont after a long illness. She was born on May 13, 1931, the daughter of Barbara Eaton Armstrong and Edward Gabriel Armstrong of New Haven, Connecticut. After graduating from Miss Porter's School in 1949, she attended Pine Manor Junior College and then graduated from the Chamberlain School of Retailing in Boston.
Lucia was formerly married to Donald Rowe Williams Jr. of Naples, Florida. She raised her family in West Hartford, Connecticut where she was a member and officer of the Junior League of Hartford. Throughout her adult life, Lucia was highly regarded for her knowledge and talent in floral and landscape design. While in Hartford, she was president of several garden clubs and served as artistic judge for the Garden Club of America, judging major shows in the northeast. She established and co-partnered a landscape design business known as Green Designs. In the early 80's, Lucia's interest in history evolved into a job as the assistant to the director of the Hartford Wadsworth Athenaeum.
Upon moving to Windsor in 1983, she was employed by Evergreen Florist. After several years, she established her own business "Lucia A. Williams Designs", specializing in wedding and party flowers. She was an active member of the Woodstock and Hanover Garden Clubs, a volunteer for Historic Windsor, and a member of both the Connecticut and New Hampshire Colonial Dames.
Lucia is survived by three children, D. Rowe Williams of West Newbury, Merrill Williams Noble of Boxboro, Massachusetts and Bradford C. Williams of Norwich, and six grandchildren. A simple memorial service will be held in the outdoor chapel at Camp Lanakila, in Fairlee, Vermont on Thursday, August 11 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Aloha Foundation scholarship fund which provides children with a summer experience at one of the three Aloha Camps. Please make checks payable to the Aloha Foundation, with "In memory of Lucia Williams" in the memo line and mail it to 2968 Lake Morey Road, Fairlee, Vermont 05045.
