Obituary

Quechee, VT - Lorry Ellen Zangl, 70, passed away on January 30, 2025 at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH. She was born in Philadelphia, PA to Joanne and Richard Lotz and lived most of her life in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. She attended Liberty High School and, upon graduation, went to Boston University School of Nursing where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1976. Her lifelong calling to become a nurse was evident from a young age, including volunteering as a candy striper during her high school years.

Following her college graduation, she worked on medical-surgical units at Sacred Heart Hospital, Muhlenberg Medical Center, St. Luke's Hospital and Allentown Hospital in the Lehigh Valley area from 1976-1984. She especially found fulfillment in caring for rehabilitation patients at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Allentown, PA from 1985-2006. She obtained her Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) credential in December 1989. From 2006-2017 Lorry worked as a homecare nurse and case manager, visiting patients in their environments and educating their family members about how to take care of their loved ones.

Lorry's heart was steadfast in two lifelong dreams: to become a nurse and to embrace the joys of motherhood. In 1986, she married Joseph Zangl, and in 1998, their journey led them to Yueyang, China, where they fulfilled her deepest wish, joyfully welcoming their beloved daughter Mia—the light of her life—into their arms and hearts.

Lorry enjoyed living in the Upper Valley, in the towns of Hanover, Norwich, and Quechee, where she moved after divorcing in 2018. She worked at Alice Peck Day Hospital, Harvest Hill, in 2018 and 2019 as a staff nurse on the memory care unit. In 2019 she once again provided heartfelt home care for several senior citizens, going far beyond the call of duty. Her unwavering dedication and extraordinary compassion left an indelible mark on those she served.

Flourishing in her new Upper Valley life, Lorry embarked on a journey of personal growth and enrichment through taking nature walks, kayaking, meditation, exercise classes, choral singing, and bird-watching.  She also enjoyed watching movies, sitting in front of her fireplace, reading mysteries, eating ice cream, and playing Candy Crush in world-class fashion.

Lorry is survived by her daughter Mia Zangl (and her life partner Anthony Church) of Goshen, NY, her sister Lia Rothstein (and her husband Richard) of Hanover, NH, her niece Ariel Clemmer (and her husband Darrell and son Kai) of Grantham, NH, and nephew Zachary Rothstein (and his wife Alli Smith and their daughter Rose) of London, UK.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care for their outstanding care and support.

A private family ceremony has been held and a celebration of Lorry's life will be held at a future date.

To honor Lorry's memory, it is suggested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to organizations supporting Alzheimer's research and awareness (which affected her mother) or a health-related organization of your choosing.
