Norwich, Vermont - Lois W. Russell, 79, died Sunday, July 7, 2012 at the Lebanon Center Genesis Healthcare in Lebanon, NH.
Lois was born March 1,1933 in New Haven, CT the daughter of Kenneth and Lillian Wood. She graduated from Northfield Academy and went on to graduate from the Hartford Nursing School. She worked for a time at Windham Hospital in Willimantic, CT as a Registered Nurse, and kept her license active for 40 years, serving as a volunteer for bloodmobiles and other community health events.
Lois was married to Robert B. Russell Jr. on September 19,1953 in Cheshire, CT. They built a house in Columbia, CT, and later moved to Somers, CT in 1965. In 1994, they retired to Castine, ME where they enjoyed many nights at the dock watching the sailing ships and Maritime Academy cadets in training. They vacationed at their summer cottage on Columbia Lake and family house in Trenton, ME, and later in Franklin, ME delighting in the time spent with children and grandchildren.
The Russell's moved to Valley Terrace Assisted Living in Norwich, VT in 2004. Since Bob's death in 2010, Lois resided at Genesis Healthcare in Lebanon, NH.
Lois took great pride in being a homemaker, mother and wife. She was actively involved in the life of her church communities, particularly in music and women's groups. She sang in the choir, played the pipe organ, and served on several committees. Her passion for crafting and cooking was shared with those she loved, benefiting the church fairs and suppers that raised funds for many philanthropic causes.
In her private life, Lois was an excellent pianist, master of crossword puzzles, and seamstress of her own clothing and home décor. She enjoyed hosting tea parties and social gatherings in her home, celebrating holidays, and writing to her endeared friends. Her greatest joy was being in the company of her family especially her grandchildren. Together with Bob, they shared a love and appreciation for nature, beauty, laughter, music and people. She was a woman of strong faith and character who deeply loved her husband, family and God.
She is survived by a daughter Robin Russell of Fairlee, VT, a son Raymond Russell of Cheshire, CT and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Friday, July 27th at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, CT at 1PM.
