White River Junction, VT-Lois de la Peña, 93, died Saturday, November 12, 2022, at The Village at White River Junction, VT.
Lois was born May 2, 1929, in Erie, PA, a daughter of Neil and Helen (Humphrey) Gebhardt. Lois graduated from Emma Willard High School in Troy, NY. She continued her education at Wellesley College earning a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Lois married Anthony (Tony) de la Peña in 1951 in Erie, PA. They made their home in New York City until Tony transferred to work in Milan, Italy and later to Buenos Aires, Argentina. They returned to the US and lived in Brooklyn, NY, and later, Long Island. During this time, Lois earned a master's degree in education from Hofstra University. They then moved to Shaker Heights, OH where Lois worked as a teacher of learning-disabled children at the Belvoir School in University Heights, OH, for many years. In 1992 they retired to Thetford, VT where they lived until 2008. After Tony's passing, Lois moved to The Woodlands in Lebanon, NH, and later to The Village at White River Junction.
Lois was an active member of the Five College Booksale and chaired the board for a time. She was a member of a spinning group, a weaver, and an award-winning knitter. She had a lifelong passion for classical music, especially opera, and shared with her husband Tony a fascination with pre-Columbian art, making many trips together to Mexico and Central America to visit the ancient cities of the region.
Lois is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anthony de la Peña.
She is survived by three sons: Temis and Michael de la Peña, both of West Lebanon, NH, and Neil, of Los Angeles, CA, as well as a daughter: Barbara Palermo of Florida.
