Springfield, Vt. — Lillian Condos Aylward died Sunday, July 10, 2016. She was born July 17, 1922 in Boston, Mass., to Thomas and Pagona (Karavoukirou) Kyron. She was brought up by her godfather Konstontinos Karakantas.
She attended Framingham State Teachers College and graduated in 1944 with a degree in elementary education.
In 1945, she married Joseph Aylward, and they raised three sons.
She had a passion for the theater, particularly the works of William Shakespeare, and performed with the Boston Tributary Theater and The Boston Arts Festival on stage and also on television.
She loved fencing which she took up in her thirties, and was the New England women's foil champion in the early 1960s. Later she coached fencing at Boston College.
In 1965, she began a teaching career in the Boston Public Schools, specializing in Reading, and English as a second language instruction. She was very much appreciated by her students and their parents.
She loved to travel and spent several weeks each summer traveling to Europe and around the United States, and especially to Greece, where she had many relatives.
She learned to sail at Community Boating on the Charles River in Boston, and served on its Board of Directors.
In later life, she was an avid chess player, frequently competing in chess tournaments around New England.
She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Aylward; her sister Vasiliki Kyron; and her brother George Kyron. She is survived by her sons, Ansgarius Aylward, of Buffalo, N.Y., Didymus Aylward of Boston, Mass., and Thalassos Aylward of Windsor, Vt.; her sister, Helena Lagos and husband José Lagos, of Naples, Fla.; her nephew, Geoffrey Kyron of Santa Monica, Calif.; and grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Alexander, Jonathan and Lucinda.

A celebration of her life is planned in August.
