Hartland, Vermont - Laurene Emily Hammond, 92, died peacefully at her beloved home of 54 years with her family at her side on Monday, May 23, 2022. She was born in Randolph, VT on June 26, 1929, to Walter and Leona Inez (Collins) Morrill and attended Windsor, VT High School. She became a Registered Nurse before marrying Basil Southworth Hammond. As a military spouse, she traveled with Basil and their three children for the first part of his 20-year service. In 1967, she resumed her career as a nurse in the oncology department at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, where she worked for over 30 years before her retirement. She dearly loved her home on the farm in Hartland and took pride in her large vegetable garden that she planted each spring. She was a talented knitter and rug braider, enjoyed playing Bridge with life-long friends, and was a member of the Red Hatters. When her children were young, she enjoyed taking them camping with friends and was part of the Hartland community group that founded the first Library at Hartland Three Corners.

She is survived by two of her children Forrest Myles Hammond and wife Colleen of Hartland and Arden Jan Tingley and husband Ralph of New London, NH; two siblings Richard Morrill and wife Ruth of Webster, NY and Anne Hewitt and husband Floyd of Essex Junction, VT; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son David Justin Hammond, and one sister Shirley Libby.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, July 23rd, 2022 at the First Congregational Church in Hartland, with a light lunch buffet to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Laurene to Hartland On Aging at PO Box 23, Hartland, VT 05048.
