Obituary

Windsor, VT – Kris McCabe, 55, died unexpectedly on Monday, June 2, 2025, in South Royalton, VT.

Kris was born on June 23, 1969, in Randolph, VT, the youngest son of E.J. "Mac" & Judy (Clark) McCabe. He graduated from Windsor High School in 1987 and took great pride in his time at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center, where he studied autobody and forestry.

He began his career as a service manager at the Carriage House in Windsor. After a brief time in Massachusetts working for Longmeadow RV, he developed a passion for street racing and built a V8 Opel station wagon—a true sleeper car he perfected with care.

In 1989, he returned to Windsor and soon met his future wife, Ruth Bacon. They were married on a perfectly clear sunny day, with puffy white clouds above, in his parents' yard in Windsor on September 14, 1991. That evening, they left for their honeymoon, arriving just in time to watch their dinner cruise pulling away from the dock, yes, they missed the boat. They made their home in Windsor and started a family.

Kris worked for Northeast Waste as a CDL Class A driver, a role he took very seriously and held great pride in; only to later teach his "little" big brother so he might attain his CDL and drive alongside one another.   On April 20, 1995, Green Mountain Carriers, Inc. was born.  A joint venture with his parents had come to fruition and officially launched. Together with his brother and their father's flat bed, they hauled cars all over New England.  Later, their grandfather alternated seats between his grandsons. They were well known across New England as their call signs, Kris' handle being "Ruthless" and Kevin's being the "Wanderer", Gramp's being "Tobacco Chewer" and Mac "Thumbscrew".  After the death of their father in 2007, the business later transitioned into G-MAC Taxicab and Garage.

Kris also spent time as a long-distance auto hauler for Richardson Transport hauling cars from coast to coast. He later worked with BF Goodrich hauling cars and demonstrating tires at raceways across the country, taking every opportunity to drive the tracks himself. He and other drivers even raced radio-controlled cars on the same tracks in their down time.

He later returned to Windsor and the family business. In 2013, he fulfilled another dream and together with his wife they formed K & R Tools, a MAC Tools franchise. Following Mac Tools, he joined Dead River Company, first as a transport driver and then later as a plant manager of Bellows Falls, VT and Walpole, NH facilities; the position he held at the time of his passing.

Kris was a member of Old South Church in Windsor, serving on the Prudential and Communion Committees. Together with his wife, they founded the "McCabe Community Christmas Dinner" where he and Ruth and their young children hosted a community dinner at Old South for anyone and everyone.  Their motto being "No one should ever be alone on Christmas." This dinner was founded in 2008 and is still running today. He was also active with the Road Guardians Vermont Chapter, as well as the American Voyager Association.  Kris was dedicated to road safety and motorcycle first aid. He contributed to Windsor On Air by recording his daughter's basketball games and served as a Cub Scout Den Leader when his son was young.

His greatest love was for his family. He recently dubbed himself the "Cool Grandpa" in anticipation of his future Granddaughter, Olivia Judy.

Kris was predeceased by his parents, E.J. "Mac" & Judy McCabe, and his beloved dog, Copper who died suddenly May 12, 2025.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ruth McCabe of Windsor; his daughter, Elizabeth Maxon (Forrest) of Corona, CA; his son, Troy McCabe (Rebecca Simon) of South Royalton; and his brother, Kevin McCabe (Blanche) of Windsor.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, from 4–6 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Old South Church in Windsor, followed by interment in Ascutney Cemetery.
