Obituary

Cornish, NH – Dr. Jules N. Manger, 71, died of brain cancer at home Tuesday, July 25, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 21, 1945 in Pelham, NY the son of Julius and Marion (Martin) Manger. He was raised in Greenwich, CT.
A graduate of Wilbraham-Monson Academy, he enlisted as a young man in the US Army and was deployed to Vietnam where he served as point man in the 1st Air Cavalry. He was wounded in combat and was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart.
Upon return from his duty, Jules graduated from Lafayette College and continued his studies at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, earning his M.D. Jules completed his internal medicine residency at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, NY. He married Janis Gail Powers on May 24, 1975 and later settled in Bow, NH, where they lived for almost 40 years.
One of the four founding members of Concord Emergency Medical Associates, Jules spent thirty years as an emergency room physician at Concord Hospital in Concord, NH. He was integral in helping Concord Hospital become a trauma center and was an adjunct professor at Dartmouth Medical School.

Outside of work, Jules was an engaged husband, father and grandfather, a naturalist, an avid reader and historian, a wordsmith, an admirer of hamburgers and handguns, an active outdoorsman and a philanthropist. He gave generously to Disabled American Veterans, various schools and other organizations close to his heart.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Janis, who died January 31, 2016.

Dr. Manger is survived by his daughter, Holly Taft of Cornish, NH and his son-in-law, Jesse Taft, his son, Jules P. Manger of Tucson, AZ, and his daughter-in-law, Linda Manger and his six grandchildren, Ayla, Marin, Abe, Jules, Wyatt and Axel. Additionally, he is survived by his six siblings, Lilian Lewis of Dallas, TX William Manger of Marianna, FL, Marion Becker of Waco, TX, Phillip Manger, Margery Welsh of Fort Washington, PA and John Manger of Bel Air, MD as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by his uncle and mentor, William Muir Manger, M.D., PhD. of New York, NY, who was a father figure and inspiration to Jules throughout his life. Dr. Manger will also be remembered by his colleagues at Concord Hospital and Horseshoe Pond, and by dear friends.

Private services by the family will be held in Cornish, NH on September 2, 2017 in lieu of a formal funeral and calling hours, as was his wish. Please contact hemanger@hotmail.com for further information.
