IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph "Butch"
Mcinerny
September 5, 1945 – March 25, 2025
Hartland, VT – Joseph "Butch" McInerny, 79, died peacefully Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, NH, with his family by his side.
Butch was born on September 5, 1945, in Woburn, MA to Joseph and Sylvia (Mantere) McInerny. He started steelwork at a young age, forming his unwavering work ethic that would follow him through his entire life. His stone masonry work brought him to Vermont, where he assisted in building many local structures.
He met Sharon Shepard in 2000, visiting her at work often, to be sure she would notice him, but the challenge wasn't winning her over, it was winning over the hearts of her three protective daughters. He quickly got their approval, and he and Sharon got married later that year, sharing 25 beautiful years of marriage.
Butch could almost always be found at the golf course with his black lab, Oliver, and his best friend, Dick Kilbourn, by his side. Oliver also accompanied Butch at work, even getting his own ham sandwich lunch packed for him. He always had a project to work on at home and he took pride in his garden that he tended with Sharon. He was a practical joker, a loving friend, and a role model in the community.
Butch is survived by his wife Sharon; three daughters, Susan Shepard and partner Robb of Hartland, Sarah (Shepard) Culver and husband Bob of South Burlington, and Sophie (Shepard) Kenison and husband Derek of Bradford; four grandchildren, Sophia Taylor, Adelaide Taylor, Jack Culver, and Harrison Culver; twelve nieces and nephews; twelve great nieces and nephews; and one sister, Amanda. He will be particularly missed by his nieces Sheryl and Laurie.
He is predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Judith and Joanne.
Butch's family would like to thank the staff at Alice Peck Day for their devoted end of life care.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date this spring. Memorial contributions may be made in Butch's honor in the form of practical jokes.
