Quechee, VT - Joseph William Greene, Sr., 81, died Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at home in Quechee, VT.
Joe was born May 4, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York a son of Martin and Madeline (Humphrey) Greene. He moved to Strafford, VT with his family as a young boy and attended school at Thetford Academy. As a teenager, his family moved away and he stayed in Vermont working at an area farm. He later moved back to New York City where he worked as a pipefitter, beginning his lifelong career in plumbing and heating. While working in New York City, as a pipefitter, he was the youngest licensed plumber to take the test and pass. Some of the development projects that he was involved in included the Twin Towers and Hunts Market.
He decided to return to the Upper Valley to raise a family and has lived here since. As a Project Manager, he oversaw the installation of the water mains and drainage systems during the construction of the Riches' Plaza and McDonalds, on 12A in West Lebanon, NH. Joe also was involved in the septic system installations for the Quechee Lakes land development project.
Joe worked at Bomhower's Oil Service, Johnson & Dix, Upper Valley Heating, Irving Oil, and he started his own plumbing and heating business with his wife, Sherry Greene. He continued in the oil business for the next several decades retiring in his late seventies due to poor health.
Joe was married to Sherry Harlow August 31, 2002. They built a home from the ground up in Charlestown, NH where they lived until recently when they moved to Quechee to be nearer to the hospital for his failing health.
When Joe wasn't working, he loved working with his hands and living life to the fullest. He enjoyed listening to blue grass music and playing his banjo. He built several custom street rods; his favorite was a Mary-Kay Pink/Black Cherry 1951 custom Ford chopped and dropped, which won several trophies. He even converted a Greyhound bus into a custom motorhome. He owned his own dragster and enjoyed drag racing in New Jersey. He was an avid hunter, who enjoyed hunting at the camp he built in Strafford, and also enjoyed painting portraits and landscapes.
He was predeceased by his brothers Martin Jr., Thomas, Donald, and sister Madeline.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Joe leaves his wife, Sherry, of Quechee, a daughter; Michelle Greene (Mark Carey) of Grantham, NH; a son, Joseph W. Greene Jr. (Ruth Ellen) of Barre, VT; stepdaughters, Emily Osborne (Darren Cottage) of Wilder, Danielle Clark (Jared) of Quechee and Jennifer Riggs (Sean O'Connor) of Quechee; grandchildren Samantha, Alex, Jennifer, Brian, Connor, Amelia, Jordan, Jackson, Jakoby, Aiden, Maggie, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held in the Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee on May 14, 2022 at 2pm. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the Tall Timbers Mobile Park Club House (Quechee).
