JOHN J. WITKOWSKI, JR.
John J. Witkowski, Jr., 83, a resident of Windsor and formerly of Southern Pines, NC, passed away Tuesday morning, May 1, 2012 at The Village at Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community.
He was born July 10, 1928 in Buffalo, NY the son of John J. and Mary M. (Leppert) Witkowski. He received his schooling in Depew, NY and graduated from Depew High School in 1945. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he was a member of the Sigma chapter of Phi Kappa Fraternity, graduating with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1949. Soon after he was drafted into the US Army, serving stateside during the Korean Conflict with the Army Corp of Engineers. Following his honorable discharge he began his career with Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, NY and was later transferred to the Hollywood Processing Laboratory in Los Angeles, CA. There he met and married Mary Lou Ditillo on January 14, 1961. In 1967, John was transferred to New Jersey and continued his career with Eastman Kodak until his retirement in 1986. He and Mary Lou moved to Palm Coast, FL in 1990 and then to Southern Pines, NC in 1994. They relocated to Vermont in 2010 to be closer to their family.
John was an avid amateur photographer and had belonged to a number of camera clubs. He had taught various photography courses beginning in the Army and while living in California and New Jersey. Most recently, he was an active member of the Sandhills Photography Club in Pinehurst, NC, where he had been a board member and had won numerous competitions. He was also fond of playing golf and bridge, and loved to combine his photography talent with travel. He was a lifelong sports fan and particularly enjoyed watching the New York Giants.
Mr. Witkowski's wife, Mary Lou, predeceased him on May 8, 2011. Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Ditillo Giroux and her husband, Stephen of Windsor, VT and Carol Witkowski Robertson of South Salem, NY, one step-granddaughter, Angela Giroux Mercier of Westfield, MA, one granddaughter, Emily J. Robertson of South Salem, NY, and one step-great grandson, Remy C. Mercier of Westfield, MA.
Services and interment will be private at St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Windsor. Knight Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
