John K. Sears, of Sharon, VT passed away on Saturday, June 26th.

He was born November 6, 1956 the eldest child of Allston and Carol (George) Sears. He grew up in the Quechee/West Hartford area and attended Hartford High School, graduating in 1974.

After meeting on a blind date in the fall of 1974, John and his wife Janet (Blake) were married in North Pomfret, VT in September 1980. They lived all their married life on Downer Road in Sharon, where John also owned and operated Downer Road Repair. John was very active in his community; serving on the town planning commission; spending many years as an instructor for Woodstock Ski Runners at Suicide Six; coordinating the building of the Sharon Elementary School playground in themid-1990s; volunteering with the Sharon Elementary School PTO where he headed up the bottle drive, helped with the Halloween party, facilitated the after school cross country ski program with Martha Cain, and helped with countless fundraisers. He spent years working as the formal care-taker for Camp Downer and the informal care-taker of the Downer State Forest. In addition, he was always ready and willing to help those around him.

John had a passion for the outdoors, spending his free time cutting wood, hunting, skiing, and exploring. He loved taking his granddaughter outside for hikes, fishing, and playing hide-and-seek. While he was humble by nature, he was immensely proud of his sons.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet; his sons Ben (Karoline) of Albany, NY and Logan (Liza) of Putney, VT; and granddaughter Allison, of Albany; his brother Don (Peggy) of Tunbridge, VT and sister Sandy Daigle (Roy) of Wilder, VT.

There will be no calling hours. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, July 3rd at 1:30pm at the Sharon Academy High School Campus, 6704 VT Route 14, Sharon, VT. A reception will follow at the Academy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sharon Academy IMO John Sears (PO Box 207 Sharon, VT 05065) or Sharon Elementary School for the John Sears Scholarship (75 VT Route 132, Sharon, VT 05065) in support of outdoor learning opportunities for the students of SES. Per CDC guidelines, unvaccinated individuals please wear a mask at the service.
