Obituary

John J. Scanlon, Jr., age 81 of Brownsville, Vermont died November 8, 2021 after a period of failing health. John was born December 12, 1939 in Queens, New York to parents John, Sr. and Irene (Carey) Scanlon. He spent his early years in Far Rockaway, New York before his family relocated to Denville, New Jersey. He graduated from Bayley Ellard High School (Class of 1957) and Seton Hall University (Class of 1961). He also lived in Rockaway and Green Township, New Jersey and Quechee, Vermont.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Matthew Meagher, grandchildren, Rachel and her husband, Daniel Wierzbicki, Brian and his wife, Ashleigh (Downing), Jacob, Benjamin and Caleb Meagher, and great grandson, Camden Wierzbicki. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Catherine Scanlon, sisters, Mary Costic and Ann Campbell, sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Patrick Vaughan, sister-in-law, Eleanor and her husband, Russell Hollister and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Catherine "Kathie" (Bald) Scanlon in 1995, his second wife, Beatrice "Bea" Ericson in 2003 and brothers-in-law, Andrew Costic, Sr. and Francis Campbell, Sr.

He spent his career in the insurance industry, retiring from Allstate in 1996. An avid skier, he was proud to be recognized as a lifetime member of the National Ski Patrol in recent years. He enjoyed skiing, golf and attending many Windsor sporting events to cheer on his grandchildren and their friends.

His family would like to thank the nurses, therapists and caregivers with Visiting Nurses of Vermont and New Hampshire for his care and support during the last year.

Memorial donations may be made to Windsor High School Athletics, 19 Ascutney Street, Windsor, VT 05089, Ascutney Outdoors (ascutneyoutdoors.org), Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society (lucymac.org) or a charity of your choice.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 15 from 5:30-7:30PM at Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Thursday, June 16 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. Following the service, family and friends are invited to join us for a light lunch at American Legion Post 25 in Windsor.

A mausoleum-side service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, June 18 in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Newton, NJ. Following the service, friends and family are invited to join us for a light lunch at the Harmony Lodge, Route 206, Newton, NJ.
