John Leo "Big John" Meyette

Plainfield, NH – John L. Meyette, 83, died Saturday September 3rd at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center in Springfield, VT.

He was born October 18, 1927 a son of Joseph Charles and Rose Lorraine (Hill) Meyette in Plainfield, NH. John attended the Windsor High School Class of 1945 before enlisting in the US Army Air Corps in 1946. Once in the Air Corps he was trained as a welder and served most of his time in Alaska until receiving an honorable discharge from the US Air Force in 1949. He returned to Plainfield, where he lived for the rest of his life, and was married to Rebecca Hoisington November 10, 1950. John worked as a farmer, logger, equipment operator and bus driver before going to work as an equipment salesman at Pinnacle View Equipment in Walpole, NH retiring in 1988 after 20 plus years of service.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a renowned story teller. He served his community as a longtime member of the Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department, for many years as the chief. He also served on the Select Board and School Board in Plainfield. He was a fifty year member of the Cheshire Lodge #23 F&AM Lodge in Cornish Flat, NH, the American Legion and a supporter of 4-H in Sullivan County.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca, in 2008 and is survived by his daughter Lorraine Meyette of Weare, NH a granddaughter Kaitlyn White of Dallas, TX; a grandson Derek White of Weare, NH and multiple other family members including many nieces and nephews whom he adored.

There is a celebration of his life tentatively planned for Veteran's Day weekend, at a time and place to be determined.
