Obituary
Thetford Center, VT - John L. MacKay, 61, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born September 20, 1954 in Malden, MA, the son of Luther D. and Elizabeth (Edge) MacKay. He grew up in Chelsea, MA and graduated from Chelsea High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and spent the next twenty-three years of his life in service to his country. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer, earning numerous awards, medals, and honors.
During his time in the Navy, he traveled the world, served in Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf, and lived and truly loved La Maddalena, Sardinia.
After retirement, he found home in Bradford, Vermont, and then in Thetford, VT. During these years he worked for P&H Oil, and later the Lake Morey Resort pro shop, which ultimately became his extended family, where he became friends with many people. He was married to his longtime companion and soul mate Kelly Gardner on May 16, 2015.
John has been a member of the USGA through the Lake Morey Country Club. Throughout his life, he has found a variety of ways to keep himself occupied. He was an avid outdoorsman, and loved everything from hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and spending time in the snow. Although he did not spend the majority of his life with many animals, he was recently able to experience life as a farmer, and grew very fond of caring for a variety of animals, which included: dogs, geese, ducks, goats, and chickens. He was also very good with his hands, and enjoyed constructing computers, woodworking, and utilizing a variety of tools while working around the house. He was also devoted to current events, and numerous sporting events. He also enjoyed traveling to various destinations with his wife.
Golf was his most favorite sport, and his devotion to the game allowed him to successfully hit 2 hole-in-ones in his lifetime at Lake Morey.
He is survived by his wife, Kelly M. Gardner of Thetford Center, a son Joshua M. MacKay of North Hampton, NH, a daughter, Jillian E. MacKay of Nashua, NH; mother Elizabeth MacKay of Methuen, MA, step children Jacquelyn Gill, James A. Tuttle, Jessie G. Perry, Charley M. Perry and Jacqueline L. Perry; four brothers, Bill, Scott, George and Dan; two sisters, Laurie Daddario and Debbie MacKay.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT at 2PM.
