Obituary

LeFEVRE, Joffre L. of Proctorsville,VT, formerly of MA, died on March 20, 2022 with his family by his side. He was seventy-six years old. Joffre was born and raised in Muskegon, Michigan. Although he served his country in the U.S. Army when called, Joffre was a lifelong artist. He studied Fine Arts (illustration) at Kendall College of Art and Design and Fine Arts (graphic design) at Grand Valley State University. He also received an honorary Masters in Fine Arts from Babson College. He had exhibited in a number of galleries and had solo shows in New England. He earned his living as an award-winning type designer, for twenty years serving as principal type designer and type product designer for Compugraphic/Agfa Corporation before founding Aboutype Associates, Inc., a type design studio and custom digitizing service in 1989.

Joffre's artistic media were as diverse as his intellectual pursuits. From watercolor, to oil, to charcoal, to film, to transfer and appropriation, to digital illustration, to ceramics, to woodworking, to paper, and back to watercolor, Joffre continually explored new ways to engage with the world around him. At the same time, Joffre examined and questioned everyone and everything for meaning and purpose. He was an avid reader, Formula One racing fan, alpine skier, and earnest interrogator of John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. Upon "retiring" to Vermont in 2009, Joffre was able to engage with all of his passions, never quite resolving the mystery of his meadow. Joffre will be remembered for his sense of play and creativity.

Joffre is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen (Werschem) LeFevre. He is survived by daughter Jill Gerber and her husband Geoff of UT, daughter Denise Dalton and her husband Sean of MA, and daughter Claudine LeFevre of England. He was predeceased by his brother Denis LeFevre of MA. He is survived by siblings Paul LeFevre of FL, Rochelle Richard of MI, Jenine Bourdon of MI, Liane Martino of MI, and Jacques LeFevre of IN. He is survived by grandchildren Charles, Cullen, and Joffre Gerber and Jack, Willem, and Sydney Dalton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his brothers of the Lamda Iota Fraternity.
