North Hartland, VT - Joanna Harriet (Coutts) Langlais, 86, died Tuesday May 27, 2014 at her home in North Hartland surrounded by her family.
She was born April 19, 1928 in London, England a daughter of Thomas and Patience Coutts. She grew up in London and the English countryside during World War II and attended Oxford University where she earned a bachelors degree and furthered studies at McGill University in Montreal earning a Master's in philosophy. While attending Oxford she met and fell in love with Pierre Langlais. They were married January 12, 1951 in London before moving to Quebec City. Joanna raised their five children with Pierre in Quebec while starting her career as a sculpture. They retired to North Hartland, VT in 1988 where she has lived since.
Joanne and Pierre opened a galley of sculptures and photographs in North Hartland.
She was an active member of St. Anthony's Church in White River Jct.
Joanna also enjoyed entertaining guests at home, gardening, skiing, and tennis. She was an excellent tennis player. She won numerous tennis tournaments including Quebec City's
She was predeceased by her husband, Pierre in 2007 and is survived by her children, Eric Langlais of Montreal, QC, Nicole Langlais of Albany, NY, Louise Langlais of Toronto, ON, Odette Langlais of Ottawa, ON, Jacqueline Langlais of Quebec QC; eight grandchildren, a sister Sue Dipple of Sussex, England as well as a close friend Milton Hurwitz of Hanover, NH.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday June 7, at 10AM at St. Anthony's Church, 15 Church Street, White River Jct., VT with burial following in Mt. Olivet Cemetery also in White River Jct.
