Joan L. Davis, 88, a longtime resident of Windsor, passed away Wednesday morning, October 3, at the Cedar Hill Healthcare Center in Windsor lovingly surrounded by family and friends.
She was born August 13, 1924 in Manchester, NH the daughter of Edward and Marion (Daudeline) Dube. She graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1942. She married Elton J. Davis in Manchester on June 28, 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Davis moved to Windsor in 1948 where they raised their family.
Joan began her employment with the Windsor School District as a school crossing guard and truant officer and worked for many years until her retirement. She was also an assistant teacher at Big Bird's Nest Pre-School in Windsor and worked for many years at the Constitution House as a historic guide. She was lovingly known to many as "Re-Re".
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor since 1949 where she was also a member of the Catholic Daughters Court of St. Francis. She was a member of the Windsor Fire Department Auxiliary, Mt. Ascutney Hospital Auxiliary, and a volunteer at the Windsor Food Shelf at St. Francis Church. Joan was also a volunteer at Mt. Ascutney Hospital where she received the volunteer of the year award for outstanding service to the hospital.
Her husband of sixty two years, Elton J. Davis, passed away on January 8, 2010.
Survivors include one son, Lt. Col. Michael W. Davis and his wife, Eileen of Nashua, NH, four daughters, Suzanne McWhinney and her husband, John of Danvers, MA, Linda Curtis and her husband, Alton Jr. of Windsor, Debra Knapp and her husband, Fred of Windsor and Crikett French and her husband, Jeff of Windsor, thirteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Survivors also include her sister-in-law, Nancy Davis of Windsor, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Raymond and Ruth Davis of Claremont, NH, and her longtime close friend, Virginia Durphey of Windsor.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Friday evening, October 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 6 at 11:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. The Rev. Raphael Nyabenda, Pastor will be the Celebrant. Committal services will follow in the St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Windsor. A reception for family and friends will follow at the church hall.
