Obituary

WINDSOR,VT

Jewel Currier Jackson, 88, died on Wednesday, October 26th after a life full of family, adventure, love and laughter. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts on Jaunuary 2nd 1928, she was the only child of Emily Littlehale & Warren Shattuck Currier, Jewel grew up swimming in the ocean waves at Plum Island and biking up town to shop. After graduating high school, she attended Jackson – the women's college at Tufts University. Jewel thoroughly enjoyed her years as a student at Tufts and returned regularly for reunions and to hear the Boston Pops. While a student at Tufts, she met the love of her life, Warren E. Jackson, whom she married a year after graduation in 1951.

Warren and Jewel enjoyed an active life together, living and raising their family in Nashua, NH, Winchester, Mass and finally, Glastonbury, CT. They spent many weekends, and after Warren's retirement, most summers exploring the New England coast aboard their sailboat, Argonaut. Following the very difficult time of Warren's death in 2005, Jewel continued to travel with friends and spent her summers reveling in family vacations at her cottage in Sebasco, Maine. She spent 7 happy years living at Covenant Village of Cromwell (CVOC), the last two in Assisted Living where the staff provided excellent personal care. She moved in July to Cedar Hill Continuing Care in Windsor, VT to be near her daughter. While in Vermont, Jewel was also under the care of Bayada Hospice. Her family extends deep gratitude to the wonderful CVOC, Cedar Hill and Bayada staffs who were warm, loving, attentive and respectful in the last months of Jewel's life.

Jewel was a generous woman, active in her church, The Congregational Church of South Glastonbury – a community that she considered family.

Jewel is loved and will be remembered always by Philip Currier Jackson (son), Mary Louise Jackson (daughter in law), Lucia Anne Jackson (daughter), Michael Kenneth Heaney (son in law), grand children Tracy Lee White, James Mason Winttuck, Micah Currier Heaney and Asher Warren Heaney, as well as nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces, and in-laws (or "NBR"s – nonbloodrelatives – as Jewel dubbed them).

Jewel lived her life as an active volunteer, good friend, great hostess, wonderful mother, loving aunt, and playful grandmother. Jewel loved meeting new people, going on adventures, traveling locally and around the world, parties (she was the life of the party), card games (which she usually won), and movies (especially old movies). She loved fresh strawberries and fresh asparagus in season, local apples and good cheese, lobster and fried oysters, but mostly she loved a table surrounded by family and friends.

Jewel was a stubborn Yankee and a resilient, vibrant woman with a great sense of humor who was interested in others, spoke the truth in love and was very opinionated. She rarely complained, rather she embraced life fully. Those who knew Jewel felt blessed by the friendship, laughter and advice. She was fiercely loyal and a great promoter of those she loved. She was well named – a Jewel in every sense of the word. As her pastor said, Jewel lived a complete life. And now she is on to her next great adventure.

The life of Jewel C. Jackson will be celebrated at the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury on Saturday, December 17th at 2:00. A reception will follow in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury, PO Box 187, South Glastonbury, CT 06073 or to Covenant Village of Cromwell, 52 Missionary Rd, Cromwell, CT 06416.
