IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jerry Mitchell
Lyman
September 3, 1942 – February 2, 2023
Jerry Mitchell Lyman, 80, died Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born September 3, 1942, in Westfield, MA, a son of Arthur Sumner and Mary Frances (Moorefield) Lyman. As a boy, Jerry's family moved around the country as his father found work including time in Detroit, Florida, and North Carolina, but he spent each summer on his aunt and uncle's farm in the Jericho District. The family lived in White River Jct. for a time while Jerry was in high school, when he met and fell in love with Charlotte McKinney and the two have been together since they were sixteen years old.
Jerry served in the US Army after high school and while on leave in July of 1961, he was married to Charlotte. After his discharge from the army, he worked briefly for Pippin Construction and then in sales at Greydon Freeman in White River Jct. before beginning his five-decade career with Vermont Transit, first in Burlington and then in White River Jct. As the couple began a family they lived in White River Jct. and later Windsor before moving to the family farm in the Jericho District where they have lived for the past fifty years.
He worked for forty eight years as a driver and safety instructor for Vermont Transit and stayed on for two more years after it was purchased by Greyhound. After retirement, he also worked as a safety instructor for Stagecoach lines out of Randolph, VT.
Jerry was very active in the Jericho Community Club including serving for a time as president. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League for several years. Whether it was a passenger on his bus or just someone he met passing on the street, Jerry loved to talk to everyone and was sincerely interested in them, he especially enjoyed getting a chuckle from people.
