Obituary

Fairlee, VT- Jeffrey Soyer died August 16th, 2024 at his home in Fairlee, VT. Jeff grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, and graduated from Teaneck High School in 1972. During the 1970s and 1980s, he lived in northern New Jersey, working for the U.S. Post Office and the Wayside Fence Company. He also worked in computer software sales, and as a DJ at clubs in New York and New Jersey. He moved to Fairlee, Vermont in 1994 and lived there for the rest of his life.

He held a variety of jobs including positions at the Lake Morey Inn, Pompanoosuc Mills, White River Toyota, and Hannaford's. His ability to amass knowledge and establish rapport with people made him an indispensable asset wherever he worked. He had a strong online presence as a book reviewer and blogger. A self-proclaimed "gay Jewish Libertarian gun nut," he had a different and unexpected take on the world--always expressed with a razor-sharp wit and sense of humor that stayed with him through his final days.

Throughout life, Jeff was deeply curious and a voracious learner. He loved music and was fascinated by all things science and nature-oriented. He was a lifelong reader of science fiction and mysteries. An admitted "hermit" and hampered by limited mobility in recent years, Jeff expressed his active and inquisitive mind by organizing video get-togethers with his family. Until the final weeks of life, he met weekly online with his brothers to schmooze and solve crossword puzzles.

He loved animals, especially his cat, Gracie, and supported local animal shelters. He felt a deep connection to the Town of Fairlee, where he served on the Planning Commission and took leadership in supporting the local July 4th celebration. He was a generous contributor to the Fairlee-Orford Food Shelf and helped the library acquire accessible picnic tables. Jeff had a large and positive impact on the people in his world. His life, with its many challenges and his unique way of forging a path through it, inspires all who knew him. He is survived by his brothers, Daniel Soyer, and Robert Prester, his nieces Elena Soyer and Leah Soyer, and his cousins Leni Johnston and Phyllis Shea.

Knight Funeral Home was honored to assist with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed in an online guestbook found at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
