Obituary

Windsor, VT – Jean H. Hinkley, 100, died Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Mt. Ascutney Healthcare in Windsor, VT.

Jean was born October 22, 1924, in Westfield, MA, a daughter of Shirley and Edna (Kingsley) Houghton. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1942. On April 25, 1943, she married Richard "Gus" O. Hinkley in Weathersfield, VT. They made their home in Ascutney and began raising a family. During Gus's service in the Air Force, they lived briefly in Texas before returning to Ascutney after his honorable discharge.

Once her children were in school, Jean worked as a chambermaid at the Kim Mar Motel and later as cook in the Ascutney Elementary School kitchen.  She later lived with her daughter in Windsor before settling at Cedar Hill in Windsor.

Jean was a devoted member of the Ascutney Union Church, where she served as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher. She and Gus often worked together to prepare church suppers. She was an active member of the Weathersfield Homemakers group. Jean was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter  2 in Windsor where she served as a Star Point and held various leadership roles.

Jean was an avid baker, known for her pies, raised doughnuts, homemade breads and raisin-filled cookies. She also enjoyed knitting and sewing. Above all, her greatest joy came from time spent with her family, she never missed a chance to care for her grandchildren or gather with loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Hinkley; a brother, Roger Houghton; and four sisters, Dorothy Wales, Marjorie Hinkley, Marion Schultz, and Beverly Rabideau.

She is survived by her four daughters: Diane Hall of Claremont, NH; Jean Whitcomb of Troy, NH; Pamela Treddin of North Andover, MA; and Sandra Micka of Windsor, VT; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, VT. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Ascutney Union Church, followed by burial in the Ascutneyville Cemetery.
