Jay C. Whitehair Jr., 78, died suddenly in an accident on December 13th, 2010.

Jay was born June 17, 1932 in Cleveland, OH the son of Jay and Janet
(McKenzie) Whitehair. He graduated from Kimball Union Academy and then earning a degree in geology from Dartmouth College. He served in the army during the Korean Conflict.

Jay married Aune Ahola July 23rd 1955 in Fitchburg, MA. They moved to Hanover where he worked as Assistant Dean of Students at Dartmouth College. He also worked in Employee Relations and as Assistant Director of Financial Aid. After his retirement he fulfilled a life-long dream and became a Maine Lobsterman and CEO of Barter's Island Boatworks and Finest Kind Trap Factory. In 2004 they moved back to the Upper Valley.

Jay was a student of life and returned to Dartmouth to further pursue his interest in geology. His second enjoyment in retirement was panning for gold in the back rivers of New England. Another passion was his advocacy for the DCARE program at Dartmouth where he served on the board with Dr. C. Everett Koop.

Jay is survived by his wife Aune Whitehair; two daughters Deborah Whitehair of Fort Myers, FL, Heidi Whitehair and her husband Emery Rouleau Jr. of Tyngsborough, MA., and son Jay C. Whitehair III and his wife, Beth Phillips-Whitehair of Norwich, and their children Ebben and Bria.

A memorial service will be held Monday, December 20, 2010 at the Rollins Chapel in Hanover, NH at 4PM. Interment will be in the Pine Knoll Cemetery at a later date. Knights Funeral Home in White River Junction has been entrusted with arrangements.

In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: the Hanover Firefighters Association - Safe Water Rescue Fund, 48 Lyme Road, Hanover, NH 03755. All donations in this fund are used to purchase water and ice rescue equipment.
