Jane Austen McClelland died on Friday, August 7, 2020 at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Center in Windsor, Vermont. She was 95 years of age.
Jane was born in Washington DC on September 30, 1924 and was the daughter of Admiral Oscar Badger USN and Isabelle Austen Badger. Admiral Badger's family lineage with the United States Navy dates back generations to that of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. Her mother is related to the 19 th Century English novelist Jane Austen.
Jane was married to Kent McClelland who predeceased her in 1995. They had been residents of Hartland, Vermont since 1991. She owned and operated Circa Legacies Antiques for over 20 years. Jane was an active member of the Hartland community chorus, and a longtime member of the First Congregational Church and its choir. Jane spent her time volunteering at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital Hospice Vigil program, as well as Stoughton House and Cedar Hill. She also volunteered at the Vermont Special Olympics events held at Quechee, VT, and was a member of the Woodstock Garden Club. Of special note, Jane had a lifetime love of animals and their welfare.
Jane is survived by her four sons, Chuck Leary of Denver CO, Rick Leary of Charleston, SC and Kevin Leary of Seattle, WA by a previous marriage; and Kent McClelland Jr. of Keene, NH. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined at Hartland, VT.
