HARTLAND FOUR CORNERS, VT
James M. Shields, Sr., 72 a longtime resident of Hyannis, MA passed away Thursday morning, November 18, at his daughter's home in Hartland Four Corners.
He was born October 8, 1938 in Hyannis the son of James Francis and Agnes Theresa (Alymer) Shields. He received his schooling in Hyannis where he graduated form Barnstable High School in 1957. He married Mary Jean Wallace in Hyannis on June 15, 1957. They had resided in Hyannis for most of their married lives, until moving to Vermont in 1976 and returning to Hyannis in 1979, where they lived until moving to Hartland Four Corners in September of 2010 to live with their daughter due to failing health.
He was employed by the Hyannis School District as foreman of the grounds and athletic fields and later for the Barnstable Highway Department for twenty five years until moving back to Vermont where he owned and operated Shields Landscaping in Quechee, Vermont for several years, until his retirement in 1999, his son took over the business. They returned to Osterville, MA where he worked at the Oyster Harbor Golf Club. Mr. Shields enjoyed fishing, clamming, boating and hunting. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of fifty three years, Mary J. Shields of Hyannis, one son, James M. Shields, Jr. of Hyannis, three daughters, Kathleen Castellini and her husband, Daniel of Hartland Four Corners, VT, Cynthia Darling and her husband, Melvin, Jr., of Hartland, VT and Mary Jo Castellini and her husband, Jerome of Hartland, VT, seven grandchildren, Matthew Castellini, Caitlin Castellini, Nathan Castellini, Ryan Darling, Ethan Darling, Lillian Shields, and Shaelagh Shields, three sisters, Kathleen Shields of Palmer, MA, Eileen Shields of Ashville, NC and Susan Shields of Charlotte, NC, several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday November 24 at 10AM at St. Francis of Xavier Catholic Church in Hyannis, MA.
