IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James S.
"Mick" Spencer
September 27, 1939 – July 25, 2022
James S. Spencer (Mick) passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center at the age of 82.
He was born on September 27, 1939 to Stanley and Helen Spencer in Lebanon, NH. Mick grew up in Quechee, VT and attended Quechee Elementary School and was a graduate of Hartford High School in 1957. After high school, he attended two years of technical college for electronics, then he joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Naval Security Group and was enlisted from 1959 - 1967. While in the Navy, Mick married his high school sweetheart, Janice, on August 13, 1960. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Mick started working for Dartmouth College as a computer programmer and worked there for 28 years until his retirement in 1995.
Never one to sit still and relax for very long, Mick began working at the Quechee Golf Course at the driving range, where he stayed for 15 years. And, most recently, Mick worked at the Montcalm Golf Course until his passing.
He was an active member in the local Elks clubs and was involved with the Elks for 58 years (01/16/1966 – present), serving as the Exalted Ruler for the Hartford Elks Lodge and District Deputy South in Vermont.
Some of Mick's favorite things to do were to hunt and fish with his son and other family members. He happily anticipated getting out into the woods, especially when he was taking one of his nieces or nephews hunting for the first time. He was an avid outdoorsman and if there was something he didn't know about hunting, fishing, or the outdoors…it wasn't worth knowing. Mick also loved to golf and would always be up for a round – anytime, anywhere. The outdoors was his happy place and sharing that love with his family brought him joy.
Mick loved to tell jokes – but would often be laughing so hard in the middle of the joke, his listener had no choice but to laugh along with him…whether it was funny or not. He was loyal, brutally honest, respectful, highly intelligent, and one of the most delightful human beings to walk this planet.
Mick is survived by his loving wife, Janice (nee Smith) and devoted daughter Julie Spencer; his grandson Daniel Marchick (Caroline) and his great-grandchildren Alyssa, Levi, and Evan; his two brothers and their spouses: Dennis and Hope Spencer, Thomas and Dawn Spencer; and his in-laws: Alana and Wayne Barrows, Deanne Spaulding, Alan and Brenda Smith, Norman and Nancy Smith; and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mick was predeceased by his father, Stanley Spencer; his mother, Helen Spencer; and sadly, most recently by his beloved son Michael (Mickey) Spencer.
A private committal ceremony for family members will be held in the Hilltop Cemetery in Quechee. A public Celebration of Life honoring Mick and his son Michael, will take place at the Windsor VT Elks Club on Saturday, August 6, from 1:00 – 4:00pm.
Condolences may be made in an online guestbook at knightfuneralhomes.com or sent to the home address in Hartland, VT or to PO Box 1436, Grantham, NH 03753.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Mick's name to the Elks National Foundation located at 2750 N. Lakeview Ave, Chicago, IL 60614-2256, or online at https://www.elks.org/enf/.
