Pomfret, VT- James A. Emery, 82, died Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Dartmouth Health in Lebanon, NH.
James was born January 27, 1942, in Hardwick, VT, a son of George O. and Hazel M. (Wilmouth) Emery. He graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1960 and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served four years and was honorably discharged in 1964. James returned for a time to Hardwick before moving to Connecticut. He worked in the building trades and learned to be a site inspector. He was married to Ina for 36 years. They lived in New England for a few years before they moved to Wasilla, AK, where he worked for the city as a building inspector. In 1999 James returned to Vermont following his divorce from Ina and found his way to Pomfret. He met a kind soul, Candle Klampert; they were married and kept a small homestead on the White River in Pomfret. Following Candle's death in 2016 James kept the little farm going, raising sheep, chickens, and geese.
He enjoyed working with his hands building, woodworking, and farming. He was well known for his big cowboy hat and boots.
James is preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. He is survived by a sister, Freida Southerland of Louisburg, NC; a brother, Bruce Emery of Durham, NC and several nieces and nephews.
