White River Jct., VT – Hilda M. Smith, 80, died with her loving family surrounding her at home in Vershire where she resided her last year. After beating numerous health hurdles in her life she was taken at the end by one she could not beat.
She was born a daughter of Wayne and May (Harrington) Burnham July 26, 1929 in Hartford, VT where she lived all her life until moving to live with her son in Vershire in her final year. She attended school in Hartford where she was married to Lawrence W. Smith December 14, 1946. Mrs. Smith was a hard working woman well into her later years. Besides keeping the books for her husbands construction business she worked several other jobs including in housekeeping at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, at J.J. Newbury's in White River Jct., at Purity Supreme and later at Shaws in West Lebanon and then at the Valley News also in West Lebanon.
Although her own needs were simple she was very giving to others. She collected cans and can tabs for CHAD and also donated homemade food and Afghans she crocheted to the Upper Valley Haven and the Bugbee Senior Center. She also made Afghans for all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband June 9, 2000 as well as a sister Hazel Therriault and nine brothers Reginald, Vernon, Lyman, Morris, Roy, Hazen, Wendell, Earl and Stanley Burnham.
She is survived by two daughters Sonya Griswold of Canaan, NH and Joyce Perkins of White River Jct. and four sons John Smith of Vershire, Kenneth Smith of Thetford Center, Kelvin Smith and Larry Smith both of White River Jct.; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two sisters Helen Luce of White River Jct. and Katherine Vaughan of East Montpelier and two brothers Roger Burnham and Fay Burnham both of White River Jct. as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., VT Tuesday June 22nd from 5-6 PM. A memorial service will follow at the funeral home at 6PM. Committal services will be held in the Hartford Cemetery at a later date.
