IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert "Chip"
C. Steele, Jr.
January 9, 1954 – January 17, 2023
Herbert Steele, better known as Chip, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023, following a 10-year battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife Patsy of 28 years; two sons Matthew and wife Cassie and Jonas and wife Sarah along with four grandchildren. He also leaves several siblings and their spouses: Nancy Spaulding and husband Rodney, Barbara Porter and husband Bob, Janice Brown and husband Tom, Susan Devost and husband Mark, Rick Steele and wife Penny, and a foster brother Jim Burke. Additionally, many nieces and nephews who were very close to him.
Chip was well known by the townspeople, having driven a school bus as a young man while building a career as a contractor (H. C. Steele & Sons, Inc.), plowing snow for over 40 years, serving on the fire commission, and dedicating seven years to the selectboard, as well as chairing the board for two terms. He loved the town of Ascutney and its residents.
He also had a deep love for hunting, fishing, sugar making, gentleman farming, and tinkering with the landscape. Heavy equipment was very much a part of his life; if anyone was looking for him they would likely find him on his excavator or tractor moving the earth!
Chip will be sorely missed by his devoted wife, family, and community. There will not be a funeral or visiting hours per his request, he simply wants to be remembered as "an old soul" that worked very hard to make our town a better place to live. Memorial donations are appreciated to Aid to Residents in Need Fund, please make checks payable to the town of Weathersfield and write "in memory of Chip" on the memo line.
