IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Heman Patrick
Garrow
June 9, 1925 – November 9, 2023
Post Mills, VT – "A character" "one-of-a-kind" "not your average joe"! Orange County lost one of its living treasures Thursday morning, November 9, 2023, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, when Heman Patrick Garrow died peacefully and completely on his own terms. Heman was 98 years young when he left this world. His body was ready, but his spirit was still strong and spunky. "It's time to go" he said, pulled the blankets up and slipped off. Born on June 9, 1925, in Addison, VT, the son of Mildred Rosa Garrow and Benjamin J. Mobbs, Heman filled his life with hard work, grit and independence. He began working at the early age of twelve doing chores at local farms and soon earned a reputation as a good worker. His young body grew strong, and his mind got sharp. After getting his driver's license at seventeen he began driving a truck delivering beer on a route that stretched from Burlington to Canaan, VT. Heman didn't just deliver beer but He also like drinking it as well and was known to walk across the frozen Lake Champlain with some of his buddies to New York State to hit the bars.
When he was 30 he met the love of his life Lorraine Lawrence. They were married in Essex and made their home in Burlington. He began his long career with Goodyear Tire in Burlington, VT. Again, his incredible work ethic led him to a supervisor position, and he soon became the head man in the heavy equipment tire servicing department. When he and Lorraine moved south to Florida, he transferred to a Goodyear Service station in Miami. He retired from Goodyear, but that didn't mean he stopped working. Heman and Lorraine moved to Georgia, and he took a position at the local country club as a ground's keeper. He worked there until Lorraine passed away in 2005. Heman returned to Vermont at the age of 81 and lived with best friends and constant companions, Kym and Matt Howe in Post Mills, VT. Some would say it was one of the best decisions he ever made. Kym watched out for Heman while Matt helped him get into trouble. Heman and Matt had quite a few adventures together including "scrapping," fishing, hunting and hitting the area car shows. He was getting up there in age but still able to hold his own when it came to working out deals by arm wrestling. Many folks around the Vershire area knew Heman for the care he took in mowing many of the area cemeteries, especially the cemeteries that would have otherwise been abandoned. As mentioned Heman had many hobbies which included hunting, fishing, ice fishing, driving FAST and doing donuts in his "buggy" with his niece Stephanie. Did we mention his famous "burn outs"? Yes, Heman was fun, independent, strong as an ox, stubborn, kind, generous, and truly a one of a kind character!
"Uncle Pat," "Buddy," "Pat" will be deeply missed by his constant companions and best friends Matt and Kym Howe, and their children Reagynne and Ethan whom he considered his family. He loved spending time with his special niece Stephanie Garrow, her children: Stephen, Stacey and Thomas Geno, and great great nephew Gavin.
He is survived by his daughter Pauline Jones and her husband, Barry of St. Cloud, FL, son James Garrow of the Florida Keys, brother Stephen Garrow of Vermont, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
A life celebration will be held on what would have been his 99th birthday, June 9, 2024. Memorial contributions may be made to the CHAD (Childrens Hospital At Dartmouth) 1 Medical Center Driver, Lebanon, NH 03756.
Condolences to his family may be left in an online guestbook at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
